NDAs, Embargoes, and Reviews

JetsonPlaysGames approaches all of our content with the intent to deliver timely, accurate, and honest information. In order to do this prior to public release, we often agree to non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) or embargoes with the developers or publishers of the games we write about. Additionally, in order to meet that timeliness aspect, many reviews of the games may be done with copies provided by the developers or publishers of the titles prior to release. If the copy is not provided by the publisher, it is done so at the cost of JetsonPlaysGames. No consideration is made for access, advertising, or goodwill — all scores or opinions are provided solely at the discretion of the reviewer or writer of the piece. Regardless, any review done with a provided copy will contain a disclosure at the bottom of the review.

Reviews In Progress, Early Impressions, and Updated Reviews

Sometimes a review copy may be given too closely to the release or embargo date to give a full impression of the game at said release. In this case, we may move to a “Review In Progress” or “Early Impressions” article. “Review In Progress” is for cases where the reviewer has put in significant time, but needs a few more crucial experiences to fully round out the review, and “Early Impressions” is for when the reviewer has only spent a limited time with the titles. In these cases, the reviewer will use their best judgment to give a proper impression of the title without scoring it. Scores are reserved exclusively for titles that have been played to an extent where the reviewer feels comfortable making a full determination.

For updated reviews, we want to stand by our scores at time of review or release. In most cases, reviews that are edited are done so to correct editorial mistakes that pass through, such as formatting or typing mistakes. If any review requires an extensive edit, a note will be placed in the review from the editor, along with an updated timestamp at the top of the page. If a game has changed significantly since release, it is up to the reviewer to decide if they would like to relitigate the score or review, but the original review and score will always be available for viewing.

How Grading Works

At JetsonPlaysGames, we intend to provide our readers with critical reviews to give them a sense of each game we play. These can be used to inform your purchasing habits, or even just for entertainment.

If you are looking for the score only, there is a dedicated section at the bottom of each scored review with final thoughts and score.

Scores are ranged 1-10. These scores take into consideration every element of the game being reviewed, but how each individual part is graded is up to the reviewer and the weight of any individual piece to the final score is also dependent on the game (i.e. music is more important to a rhythm game than, say, an FPS).

All reviews are strictly the opinion of the writer of each review. Our opinions are not for sale — no consideration is made for advertising, exclusive access, or the goodwill of the publishers whose titles we cover.

What the Scores Mean

1 : Unplayable

This game is functionally unplayable. Any consideration beyond “can this game be played” is rendered meaningless.

2 : Miserable

Not fun to play and offers nothing worth experiencing.

3 : Awful

No real bright spots. Falls flat across the board.

4 : Poor

Has significant limitations or flaws that prevent it from being recommended.

5 : Average

Your time could be better spent elsewhere, but it may not be a negative encounter.

6 : Good

An enjoyable game, if you know where to look. May have significant flaws, but something here is worth exploring.

7 : Very Good

Excels in at least one or two meaningful ways. These games may be lacking some polish, but we came away happy about the adventure.

8 : Great

An outstanding game that succeeds in more ways than not. May come with some caveats, but there is enough here to rave about.

9 : Exemplary

Fully recommended games that present the player with an engaging experience that will be fondly remembered.

10 : Genre-Defining

While there may not be a perfect game, these games are truly works of art. They push the boundaries of what a games do or can be in some or many ways. The highest recommendation we can offer.
